Research

Knowledge, language and values across cultural spheres.

My research lies at the intersection of intercultural German studies, intercultural communication and German as a foreign language. It focuses on the question of how knowledge, language and values are conveyed, absorbed and reinterpreted across cultural spheres – particularly in the German-Moroccan context.

Intercultural German Studies and German as a Foreign Language

A key focus is on the theoretical and pedagogical foundations of the subject within an international, and in particular Moroccan, higher education context, including translation and German as an academic language.

Knowledge circulation and reception

A second area of focus is the circulation of knowledge between Europe and the Mediterranean region, as well as the linguistic and cultural frameworks of interpretation within which this takes place.

Islamic Ethics and Education

A third area of focus is the classical history of Islamic education and knowledge, and Islamic ethics. I am investigating how ethical concepts of education, virtue and knowledge – as exemplified by Miskawayh – came into being, how they were transmitted, and how they are received in the German-speaking world and in Europe. This includes discourses on education in Islam, the shaping of teaching and learning cultures, and interreligious and intercultural dialogue.

Cooperation

Publications, conferences, collaborations.

I explore these topics in monographs, edited volumes and at international conferences, as well as through collaborations with colleagues in Morocco, Germany and beyond.
